The questions we actually get asked
FAQs
Grouped by who's asking. If yours isn't here, we'll answer it directly.
For therapists
What am I actually offering a client?
A private studio for the week between sessions. They can write a thought record, keep a note, save a video that landed, or draw something. If you've allowed it, they can put any of that on a Session Board for you to read before you meet. You decide at setup whether sharing comes back to you at all, and whether the AI tools are on.
What if a client puts something important in there and I don't see it?
This is the question we're asked most, and the design answers it directly. Nothing arrives unannounced: the client chooses what goes on the board, and the board is something they bring to a session rather than a channel into your week. Nothing in OutSession is presented to a client as a way to reach you, and the tools point back at your next session rather than at us. If you'd rather not receive anything at all, a one-way studio lets you share resources in while their space stays entirely private.
Do I have to read anything between sessions?
No, and the product is built to work when you don't. There's nothing to log into, nothing that needs answering, and no notification asking anything of you. A client's week still has somewhere to go, and if the board never gets read the client has still done the thinking.
Is this an AI chatbot for my clients?
No. Worksheets are one-shot: a client describes a situation, and gets back a structured reflection with a beginning and an end. There's no conversation, no advice, and no ongoing dialogue. If you'd rather not have AI involved at all, you can turn it off per studio, and the studio still works as a notes, resources and Session Board space.
Can I see what a worksheet looks like before I use it with anyone?
Yes. Every therapist gets their own studio and a demo client during onboarding. Generate a thought record, read it end to end, and decide whether the tone fits how you work before a real invite goes anywhere.
What does it cost, and what do my clients pay?
£29.99 a month, unlimited clients, first three free and no card to start. Your clients never pay anything.
What do you do with what my clients write?
It's stored to be returned to, and it isn't sold, profiled, or used for advertising. Generating a worksheet sends the text to our AI provider through Cloudflare's AI Gateway, where under the API terms it isn't used to train their models. Every processor we rely on is named in the privacy policy.
How does a client sign up?
They don't. You create the studio with an alias only you see, and hand over a link or a QR code. There's no email, no real name, and no form. The first time they open it they set a password only they know, which also means you can't get back in afterwards.
What happens if a client writes something that worries you?
Requests are checked for crisis indicators before a worksheet is written, and UK support contacts are shown alongside the result. We don't attempt crisis intervention and we don't route anything to you as an alert. The trust and ethics page sets out what's checked and when.
For clients
Does my therapist see everything I write?
No. Worksheets and whiteboards stay private until you put them on your Session Board. Notes, events and saved resources work the other way round, because those are the things you make in order to raise them, so they're visible from the moment you save them. You can turn that off on any single item.
Is it really anonymous?
Your therapist labels your studio with an alias they choose, and that alias is the only name we hold. You're not asked for a real name, an email, or a date of birth, and there's no signup form. If you'd rather sign in with your own email later, you can, where your therapist has allowed it.
Does it cost me anything?
No. If your therapist set up your studio, their membership covers it and there's nothing for you to pay.
How is this different from ChatGPT?
ChatGPT will talk back and offer advice. OutSession won't do either. It takes what you've written and shapes a structured CBT exercise around it, the same kind your therapist might hand you on paper, then saves it so you can bring it to your session.
Do I have to use it?
No. There are no streaks, no reminders, and nothing that builds up while you're away. Some weeks it'll be useful and some weeks it won't, and skipping it doesn't cost you anything.
What if I'm in crisis?
Contact your therapist directly, or a crisis service. Samaritans is 116 123, free, any time. OutSession isn't built for urgent situations and won't be the fastest way to reach anyone.
Will this replace my sessions?
No. Nothing here is therapy, and nothing in it is doing the therapeutic work. It's a place to think between sessions so that the session has somewhere to start.
For individuals
What's an individual account?
OutSession used on your own, with no therapist connection. It suits people whose therapist isn't on the platform, people between therapists, and people who just want a private space to reflect. You get the studio tools: worksheets, notes, events, and a resource library.
Do I need to be in therapy?
No. If you are, it can help you prepare for sessions even where your therapist isn't using it. If you aren't, it's a structured space to think in, and it doesn't pretend to be more than that.
What does it cost?
A free account includes five worksheets a month, plus notes, events and a resource library, with no card needed. Paid plans aren't open yet, so the free account is the whole product today.
How is it different from going through a therapist?
A therapist-created studio can share both ways: they push resources in, and you share items back via the Session Board. An individual account has no connection, so nothing is shared with anyone.
Can I connect my therapist later?
Not automatically yet. If they join, they can invite you to a studio, but it's a separate space with its own sign-in. Anything in your individual account stays there and stays private.
Is my data private without a therapist connection?
Same standards as a therapist-connected studio, with an email-based login. We don't build advertising profiles and we don't sell what you write. Generating a worksheet sends your text to our AI provider through Cloudflare's AI Gateway, and that's the only place your words leave OutSession. No other person using OutSession ever sees them.
