Feeling guilty about unhappiness despite blessings

You wrote

I know I have a good life on paper. I have things other people don't. But I still feel unhappy sometimes and then I feel guilty about that. Like I don't have the right to complain. It stops me from talking about it because I think people will just say I should be grateful.

It's tough when you feel guilty about being unhappy, particularly when you know others might perceive your life as enviable. The idea that you must always feel grateful because others have less can be quite a burden to carry.

  • Explore the guilt

Spend 5 minutes writing about the last time you felt guilty for being unhappy. Describe what triggered it and what thoughts went through your mind.

  • Check your gratitude

Write down 3-5 aspects of your life you're grateful for, then 3-5 things that genuinely bother you. Notice how they coexist.

  • Feelings scale

Rate from 0-10 how guilty you feel when you think about your unhappiness right now. Notice any changes in this over time.
