Cancelled plans with a friend and self-blame

You wrote

A friend cancelled our plans and my first thought was that I must have done something to put them off. It happens with work too — if a meeting goes badly I take responsibility for the whole room's mood.

It sounds like you tend to quickly turn situations towards something you've done, even when a friend simply cancels plans. It's like you're carrying the weight of responsibility for more than your share, whether with friends or in work meetings.
